Heavy snow brings road closures
Underlying ice makes driving conditions treacherous
Heavy snow closed roads and a bridge in northern England.
The A66 was shut in both directions between the the A685 in Cumbria and the A1 at Scotch Corner.
The A68 in Northumberland and the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough were also closed because of treacherous road conditions.
Police have advised motorists not to travel unless absolutely necessary. Met Office severe weather warnings remain in place in the North East of England.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We are reminding members of the public to take extra care in the adverse weather conditions and advise motorists to only travel if it is absolutely essential."
