Desert dusting
Fresh snow blankets desert foothills and forested mountains on the north side of the San Gabriel Mountains after the fourth storm of the week dissipated on Jan. 23 northwest of Wrightwood, Calif. The storms forced thousands of people in the Los Angeles-area foothill cities to evacuate because of fears of possible mudslides and debris flows from wildfire-scarred mountains. But the rain let up, the slide threat subsided and evacuees got to go home.
