Fatal flash flooding in Thailand by Nina Ridge
Torrential rain has fallen over the past few days in Thailand causing flash floods which have killed at least four and injured 12.
Wild flash floods have swept down across mountainous areas of Thailand’s northern provinces of Phetchabun and Phitsanulok. Around 5000 people have been affected.
One of the worst hit areas was Phetchabun where landslides wiped out whole villages, washing away homes and livestock and cutting off roads. Further flooding is expected in parts of Phetchabun as water levels in the Pasak river continue to rise.
Residents living on the low-lying areas in the northeastern province of Kalasin were bracing themselves for the risk of possible flooding as the water level in the two main rivers in the area increased rapidly.
Forecasters warn of more heavy showery rain for the rest of today and over the next few days with the likelihood of further flash flooding and landslides in some areas.
