Fresh flooding hits North Korea by Darren Bett
Heavy rain has lashed many parts of North Korea for a second time in a month flooding farmland and cutting transport links.
Storms caused by the remnants of Typhoon Wipha have drenched the country with torrential rain over the past few days. Western parts of the country were badly hit with the provinces of south Hwanghae, south Phyongan and north Hwanghae worst affected. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration around 15 inches (381mm) fell across these western provinces in the past two days.
Last month some of the heaviest rainfall in decades battered North Korea, triggering widespread flash floods and landslides that left around 600 dead or missing with over 100,000 people rendered homeless. Vast areas of cropland were also destroyed along with nearly 520 miles (837 km) of road and rail lines.
Forecasters predict further outbreaks of rain across parts of North Korea over the next few days but it looks like the worst of the rain is over.
