Melor heads for Japan

Super Typhoon Melor tracks north-westerly direction towards Japan.

Super Typhoon Melor is churning in a north-westerly direction in the Pacific towards the eastern tip of Japan.

The storm is packing sustained wind speeds of 161 mph (259km/h) with gusts to 195mph (314km/h), but is expected to weaken before making landfall on Thursday.

Melor has already tracked past the Northern Mariana Islands, where it dumped over two inches of rain in six hours.

It is also responsible for keeping Tropical Storm Parma virtually stationary to the north-west of the Philippines, where it is continuing to batter the northernmost island with heavy rain and strong winds.
