Heavy rain causes floods in the Philippines ( bbc.com)

Heavy rain causes floods in the Philippines by Tomasz Schafernaker

Heavy rain has caused floods and landslides across parts of northern Philippines and Luzon through Thursday. One person was killed after being swept away by flooding from a swollen river in Kadapawan City, Mindanao during Thursday evening.

Much of Central Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao have been hit by heavy rain and thunderstorms swelling rivers and inundated homes. Authorities fear that more heavy rain and storms today may lead to further landslides.

The recent downpours have been generated by a cold front lying close to the Philippines. Further heavy rain and widespread thunderstorms will develop through today, affecting more northern parts of the country with other areas seeing lighter scattered showers.

The latest spell of heavy rain marks the end of the rainy season in the Philippines, which starts in May and ends in November. By December, the country enters the cooler, dry season which runs till February.
