Opnieuw kou onderweg Engeland.... ( en regio...) BBC

Another cold snap for the UK on the way - why?

AdvertisementWintry weather is forecast for the British Isles early next week, bringing with it the possibility of snow on the eastern side of the England and Scotland.

As temperatures drop, the drier air coming from the continent will help break up the cloud cover allowing some sunshine by Tuesday, in particular in the east of the UK. There is an increasing possibility of snow showers down the North Sea coast as the week progresses.

The weather will certainly not be as harsh as the conditions seen through December and January, with the vast majority of the country seeing daytime temperatures above freezing, but with night time frosts.

Currently the forecast shows no end to the impending cold snap with the cold weather lasting well into next week.

A key player in the return to the cold weather is the position of the jet stream. The jet stream is the dividing line between the milder Atlantic air and the cold air over northern Europe. With a high pressure building over Scandinavia early next week, the jet stream moves south over the weekend and the doors open for the cold air, sleet and snow to move in.

BBC Broadcast Meteorologist Darren Bett explains why the jet stream will have a big impact on our weather next week.
