Heavy snow showers forecast for the end of the week

After the light sprinkling today yet more snow is forecast for the southeast at the end of the week.

The heaviest snow showers are forecast during Thursday and Friday with up to 5 centimetres (2 inches), possibly 15 centimetres (6 inches) settling in Kent and East Sussex.

With a cold keen wind coming from the northeast the temperatures will fall through the week, bringing night time frosts. Tuesday and Wednesday should see the cloud break giving way to some sunshine, but it will remain cold. Western coasts will see the best of the sunshine this week.

Kent County Council say they are confident that salt stocks are adequate for the county after taking delivery of 5,000 tones of salt in the past few weeks. East Sussex has 1,100 tonnes of salt in stock for gritting their road network, with another 350 tonnes being delivered later this week; however travel disruption remains a possibility to the east of London.

At the moment forecasters see no end to the current cold snap.

The air over the continent is dry so in itself would not produce snow but as the cold air passes over the North Sea it picks up enough moisture to produce snow showers. Sarah Keith-Lucas explains the process.
