Storm floods Northeast, cuts power to 300,000
Nearly 300,000 without power from Maryland to Maine
• Sunday to Monday rain total: 7.81 inches in Central Park
• N.J., W.V. declare states of emergency amid floods, rain, wind
• Boston Marathon forecast: 30-mph wind, temps in 30s
NEW YORK (AP) -- People were evacuated from flooded homes Monday and hundreds of thousands had no electricity as a fierce nor'easter drenched the Northeast with record rainfall.
Residents in at least one New York City neighborhood paddled through streets in boats. And in suburban Mamaroneck, Nicholas Staropoli said a truck near his home "actually floated up on the riverbank."
Rain was still falling Monday morning in the New York area and New England after it began early Sunday along the East Coast from Florida to New England. The National Guard was sent to help with rescue and evacuation efforts in the suburbs north of New York City. (Watch rescuers save West Virginians from flooded homes )
Firefighters plucked Kathleen Reale and her twin boys from their window in suburban Mamaroneck using a front-end-loader. Water reached up to her knees in her garage and basement and her family was evacuated to a shelter.
"I mean everything will be ruined," she said Monday. "Everything will be gone. It's unbelievable."
The shelter was filled to capacity Monday morning with about 300 people sleeping on cots. Mamaroneck, in Westchester County, called for voluntary evacuations of areas on Long Island Sound.
Record rainfall reported
The rain totaled 7.81 inches in Central Park from early Sunday to Monday morning, the National Weather Service said. The previous record in the park for April 15 was just 1.8 inches, set in 1906. (Watch the New York storm surge demonstrate the nor'easter's dangers )
Snow fell in inland areas, including 17 inches in Vermont, with flakes still falling Monday across sections of Pennsylvania, upstate New York and Maine.
Nearly 300,000 homes and businesses had lost power from Maryland to Maine.
In Westchester County, north of New York City, all public schools were closed Monday. Cars were stalled in water on numerous roads and several major highways were closed at times by flooding.
New Jersey also had school closings, highways blocked by water and dozens of residents being evacuated from homes, authorities said.
The governors of Maine, West Virginia and New Jersey declared states of emergency. The governors of New Jersey and Connecticut urged residents to stay home from work and off the roads. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer deployed 3,200 members of the National Guard to areas where flooding was possible.
Crews scramble to save dam
Hundreds of people had been evacuated from their homes in southern West Virginia as crews worked to pump water from a private lake near Hamlin to keep an unstable earthen dam from collapsing.
If the dam breaks, millions of gallons of water could pour into Hamlin, Mayor Brian Barrett said Monday. "We're being told it could be eight or nine feet of water," Barrett told the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington.
Coastal residents were urged to evacuate in parts of Maine, and a nursing home in Portland was evacuated as a precaution, state officials said. In southeastern New Hampshire, parts of downtown Newmarket were evacuated because of flooding.
Flights were delayed Monday at the New York area's three major airports, where airlines canceled more than 500 flights Sunday as wind gusted to 48 mph, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Dozens more flights were canceled in Philadelphia, Boston and elsewhere in New England. (Check FAA flight delay information)
"We came up to see the city," said Amby Lewis, the leader of a girl scout troop from North Carolina who was stranded at LaGuardia airport. "And the lovely weather rolled in and we've been stuck ever since."
The storm about 20,000 runners in Monday's Boston Marathon something to worry about besides Heartbreak Hill as the course was doused with several inches of rain driven by wind gusting to more than 30 mph.
"When you live in the Northeast, you've got to respect this kind of weather," said marathoner Rob Comitz, 31, from Harleysville, Pennsylvania.
Power outages affected more than 10,000 households and businesses in the New York area and more than 55,000 customers elsewhere in the state, more than 30,000 in Maryland, 50,000 in Pennsylvania, more than 43,000 across Connecticut, at least 46,000 in New Hampshire, 17,000 in Maine, 25,000 in Vermont and 12,000 in Massachusetts, utility officials said.
At least three tornadoes touched down Sunday in South Carolina. One cut a 14-mile-long, 300-yard-wide swath through Sumter County in the central part of the state, killing a woman and seriously injuring four other people.
One person was killed by a tornado in South Carolina, and two died in car accidents -- one in upstate New York and one in Connecticut. The storm rattled the Gulf states Friday and Saturday with violent thunderstorms after taking Texas with at least two tornadoes, and it was blamed for five deaths in Texas and Kansas

Zeeleeuw imiteert haai

Eerste berichten New York VS: Reeds 8 doden gemeld bij extreem weer New York

Nor'easter pounds New York and East Coast
Story Highlights• NEW: Storm system blamed for one death

• NEW: Boston, coastal Massachusetts to feel storm's brunt
• New York mayor urges the use mass transit Monday

NEW YORK (CNN) -- As an oncoming nor'easter dumped heavy rains along the mid-Atlantic coast, Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged New Yorkers to use mass transit Monday and take other precautions.
The storm system was blamed for one death, which occurred in Sumter County, South Carolina, when a suspected tornado touched down Sunday morning. State emergency management spokesman Joe Farmer said other counties reported downed trees and some damage to buildings, but there were no other reports of injuries, he said.
In New York, the storm was expected to cause coastal flooding as it crossed Long Island on Sunday night, with tides 3-5 feet above normal, but Bloomberg said schools will be open Monday. (Watch the tide rise on a New York beach )
A flood warning was in effect until early Monday, though no mandatory evacuations had been ordered. Commuter train service between upper Manhattan and Connecticut was interrupted Sunday night because of flooding in parts of the Bronx, transit officials reported.
"If you can avoid driving tonight, please stay off the roads," Bloomberg told reporters from the city's emergency operations center. "Tomorrow morning, I cannot encourage you enough to use mass transit."
Although nine emergency shelters had been opened in the city's five boroughs, they were housing just two people as of dusk, he said.
"If you want to sum up what has happened with this storm, the rains have been pretty much what had been forecast, and fortunately the winds have been lighter than what was forecast," Bloomberg said.
In Elmhurst, Queens, 1,300 homes were without power.
The nor'easter was blamed for 350 flight cancellations at New York City's three area airports on Sunday, with delays exceeding eight hours at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
At LaGuardia Airport, arrival delays were averaging about three hours, the FAA's Web site said.
Hundreds of people were stranded at LaGuardia when their flights were canceled. Some who couldn't find a seat spread out their bags on the floor and slept on them.
"It's the weather, what can we do?" asked Myre Maureen Harte, whose Florida flight had been delayed for 15 hours. "We should be compensated in some way for this."
Delays were averaging two hours at Newark-Liberty International, while the average arrival delay at Boston's Logan International was slightly more than an hour.
At Philadelphia International Airport, delays were two hours.
"It is imperative that folks check with their carriers," said Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
In western North Carolina, the central pressure of the intense low pressure system was estimated at 986 millibars (mb), and was expected to drop to 977 Sunday evening, well below the record low of 991.57 mb recorded during a storm that struck New England in December 1992.
Flood warnings were issued for much of coastal Pennsylvania, Delaware and New York, including the cities of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the greater New York metropolitan area.
Some roads had already flooded in the New York metro area by Sunday afternoon. Flooding was reported in Lodi, New Jersey, where the Saddle River overflowed near Route 46, causing several businesses to be evacuated, including a funeral home, police said.
Flooding was also reported in Macungie, Pennsylvania; Wilmington, Delaware; Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.; Elkton, Maryland; Hopatcong, New Jersey; Swarthmore, Pennsylvania; Camden, New Jersey; Lindenwold, New Jersey; Brass Castle, New Jersey; and Edgewater Park, New Jersey, the National Weather Service said. (Watch flooding on the East Coast and West Virginia )
In coastal areas of New England, 4 inches to 6 inches of rain were possible, the Weather Service said.
By Monday, Boston and coastal Massachusetts will experience the high tides and coastal flooding, the weather service said. Winds of 25-35 mph are expected to decrease as the day progresses.
In coastal areas of New England, four to six inches of rain were possible, the weather service said. And the rain could turn to snow as it moved into parts of the region, such as northern Vermont.

Voorbereiden..

Hundreds of flights canceled as storm nears
Story Highlights• NEW: Storm floods people out of their homes in West Virginia
• Nor'easter could bring worst flooding in 14 years
• New York governor deploys 3,200 National Guard members
• Storm blamed for three deaths in Kansas, two in Texas

NEW YORK (AP) -- Airlines canceled 300 flights Sunday as a hard-blowing nor'easter gathered strength along the East Coast and threatened to deliver some of the worst shore flooding in 14 years.
The storm, already blamed for five deaths on the Plains, also flooded people out of their homes in the middle of the night in West Virginia.
The cancellations at the New York area's three major airports affected most carriers, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. More cancellations were expected throughout the day.
Meteorologists expected sustained wind of 40 mph and a storm surge of 3 to 5 feet, a combination that could cause as much coastal damage to New York's Long Island as a winter storm that wreaked havoc there in late 1992, Gov. Eliot Spitzer said. (Gallery: Storm moves across the U.S.)
The 1992 storm also caused millions of dollars worth of damage to low-lying areas on the New Jersey shore, and on Sunday some residents of those areas were packing up to leave. (Read: The Big East storm in historical perspective)
"This is going to be bad," Shaun Rheinheimer said as he moved furniture to higher spots at his house on New Jersey's low-lying Cedar Bonnet Island. Streets were beginning to flood by late morning and waves splashed over bulkheads into backyards.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms extended from Florida up the coast to southern New England on Sunday and the National Weather Service said Washington's Reagan National Airport had measured 1.43 inches of rain.
Warnings, watches all along the coast
The weather service posted storm warnings and watches all along the East Coast, with flood warnings extending from Virginia north to the New York area. Winter storm warnings were in effect for parts of New England and eastern New York state. (Northeast flood, storm warnings)
The storm also caused flooding in the mountains of southern West Virginia, where emergency services personnel rescued nearly two dozen people from homes and cars in Logan and Boone counties early Sunday. Two people were unaccounted for.
"It's about as bad as it can get," said Logan, West Virginia, Fire Chief Scott Beckett. "This thing came down at 2 or 3 in the morning, when people were sleeping in their beds. They just didn't know what was happening."
Two to 4 inches of rain was forecast for the New York City region with wind gusting to 50 mph. The weather service said as much as 20 inches of snow was possible at higher elevations of New York's Adirondacks by the time the storm passes late Monday and Tuesday.
Spitzer said some low-lying areas of Long Island may need to be evacuated, and he deployed 3,200 members of the National Guard to potential flood areas. Ferry service to Fire Island, off the south shore of Long Island, was halted, and New York City opened nine emergency storm shelters in flood-prone locations.
Pennsylvania and Connecticut officials were opening emergency operations centers, Pennsylvania in anticipation of heavy snow and Connecticut because of the threat of coastal flooding. New Jersey made preparations for heavy snow in the state's northwest corner and flooding elsewhere.
"We're kind of all sitting back, getting prepared and hoping it doesn't get as bad as it has been in different parts of the country," said James Thomas, Connecticut's emergency management commission.
The storm also rained out Sunday's Washington Nationals game with the New York Mets at New York's Shea Stadium. Last weekend, snow dumped by another major storm system wiped out scheduled Mariners-Indians games at Cleveland for four straight days.
"It is unusual for this time of year. We probably see a storm like this, at this time of year, probably once every 25 years or so," said Brian Korty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Camp Springs, Maryland. (Watch the storm system spread damage across the country )
The storm had been blamed for five deaths as it blew out of the Plains late in the week, two in violent thunderstorms in Texas and three on slippery roads in Kansas, where more than a foot of snow fell. Two tornadoes caused damage Friday in Texas. (Watch huge hailstones pound Texas neighborhood )

Flood watch in New York as storm heads east
Story Highlights• NEW: Storm blamed for three traffic deaths in Kansas
• Two deaths in Texas also blamed on storm
• System to strengthen as it reaches Northeast on Sunday
• Nor'easter storm plus high tide could cause coastal surges

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) -- A severe weather system blamed for five deaths plowed eastward Saturday, rattling the Gulf states with strong thunderstorms as the Northeast prepared for possible coastal flooding.
The storm blew across the southern Plains on Friday, piling snow a foot deep in Kansas and raking Texas with high wind.
"I felt my house start shaking like the wind and I ran in here and grabbed my little girl," Amanda Rymer, 21, said in Haltom City, Texas. "As soon as I moved her, the roof fell in right where she was standing." (Watch how wind tossed 18-wheelers like toys )
The storm tore roofs off houses in Rymer's neighborhood and destroyed porches and garages. About a dozen tractor-trailer rigs were blown onto their sides.
One man was killed in Fort Worth by a pile of lumber that fell on him from his truck during the storm, and a police officer in Irving died when his patrol car slid on wet pavement and struck a utility pole, authorities said.
Three people were killed in Kansas in traffic accidents on highways covered with ice and slush, police said Saturday.
By midday Saturday, the system was spreading rain from Louisiana to Virginia and across much of the Ohio Valley.
Lines of strong thunderstorms rolled across Louisiana and Mississippi into northern Alabama, and the National Weather Service posted tornado warnings for wide areas of Mississippi. (Watch storm victim describe dirt, debris flying through house )
The weather system was forecast to strengthen when it reaches the East Coast on Sunday and form a nor'easter, a storm that follows the coast northward, with northeasterly wind driving waves and heavy rain.
"This is very odd for this time of year," National Weather Service meteorologist John Koch said Saturday in New York. "This is something that you would expect to see more in the middle of winter."
A flood watch was posted for the New York City region, as the weather service forecast 2 to 4 inches of rain Sunday with wind gusting to 50 mph. Snow and sleet were possible inland, Koch said.
The combination of rain, onshore wind and the approach of one of the spring's highest tides on Tuesday could add up to significant coastal surges, Koch said.
The New York National Guard alerted units that might be needed for emergency work, and Long Island's Suffolk County told emergency workers to be ready for possible duty.
"There is potential for a very bad storm," said Joseph Williams, Suffolk County's commissioner of fire, rescue and emergency services.
Snow continued falling Saturday in eastern Kansas, where some schools and businesses closed Friday as blowing snow created whiteout conditions. Nearly a foot of snow fell near Syracuse, Kansas.
NASCAR Nextel Cup qualifying races at Texas Motor Speedway were halted and thousands of fans were advised to move to safety as tornado sirens blared at the speedway in Fort Worth. (Watch huge hailstones pound Texas neighborhood )
A tornado was spotted near Bedford, a suburb between Dallas and Forth Worth, though no damage was reported, the National Weather Service said.
Story Highlights• NEW: Storm blamed for three traffic deaths in Kansas

knmi meet vroegste zomerdag ooit gemeten.
Zomer nog nooit zo vroeg begonnen
Unieke reeks zomerse dagen
Zomer in april

Zomer in april

wedergeboorte ( 5e zonpassage, maya indianen)
Lieve mensen.

Wildfire brings destruction to Beverly Hills
Story Highlights• 15-acre blaze wreaks havoc on Beverly Hills
• Winds brought down power lines, which sparked flames
• 2 killed in sandstorm-induced interstate pileup
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Fires erupted in the hills above Los Angeles on Thursday, damaging or destroying several homes as dangerous north winds fueled the flames. Farther inland, a blinding sandstorm triggered a deadly highway pileup.
Wind speeds of more than 50 mph propelled the flames in grass near expensive mountainside homes above the city of Beverly Hills, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said.
About 200 firefighters, some using water-dropping helicopters, contained the blaze to 15 acres, or less than a square mile, in the Beverly Glen neighborhood on the south face of the Santa Monica Mountains. (Watch as flames blacken Beverly Hills homes )
Interim Los Angeles Fire Chief Douglas Barry said homes were damaged by flames. The fire broke out after powerful winds toppled power lines, igniting brush behind a residence, said Ron Myers, a fire department spokesman.
Daphna Ziman was getting ready for a Hillary Clinton fundraiser at her Woodland Drive home when there was suddenly smoke everywhere. Police came to the door and told her to evacuate.
"It was black outside, you couldn't walk through it, I've never seen anything like it," she said.
Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said late Tuesday the fire was essentially contained, but firefighters were still working because of hotspots and concern that winds could fan embers into flames.
Smaller fires burned elsewhere in Southern California, including a 15- to 20-acre blaze in Palmdale, a desert city in northern Los Angeles County. Homes were threatened for a time before most of the active flames were knocked down, county fire Inspector Sam Padilla said.
Fires caused power outages for more than 190,000 customers in Los Angeles County and surrounding areas and utility officials did not know when service would be restored. Commuters heading east out of Los Angeles found traffic snarled by blacked-out signals and streets cluttered with downed palm fronds.
Southern California is extremely fire-prone after a dry winter. Downtown Los Angeles has recorded less than 2½ inches of rain since July 1.
In the inland region east of Los Angeles, 50 mph winds whipped sandstorms across San Bernardino County's desert roadways.
A morning pileup on Interstate 40 killed two people and injured several others near Barstow during zero-visibility conditions, authorities said.
"It almost looks like fog right now, and it just encompasses hundreds of square miles," said California Highway Patrol Lt. Todd Sturges.
High winds at Los Angeles International Airport forced jets to make second approaches, while others chose to divert to LA/Ontario International Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Story Highlights• Passengers unhurt after plane skids off Michigan runway
• Storm blamed for deaths of six people in Iowa
• Colorado expects up to 18 inches of snow in foothills Friday
• Up to a foot of snow forecast for parts of the Northeast
Adjust font size:
CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- More snow fell across the northern states Thursday as a deadly storm that already had grounded hundreds of flights, postponed a baseball game and disappointed those longing for the warmth of spring moved eastward.
A jet trying to land at Traverse City, Michigan, skidded 50 feet off a runway in the heavy snow early Thursday. The plane remained upright, and the 46 passengers and three crew members were unhurt, Pinnacle Airlines spokesman Phil Reed said.
Six deaths elsewhere were blamed on the slick conditions.
The worst of the storm blew into the Northeast, where the National Weather Service posted a winter storm warnings Thursday for much northern New England, forecasting up to a foot of snow through Friday in some areas.
In Vermont, Mount Snow, a ski area that had already closed for the season, decided to reopen for the weekend after getting 5 inches of new snow by midday Thursday.
"Better late than never," said Mount Snow spokesman Chris Lenois. "There's no bare spots on the mountain. I'm looking out my window, and it's all white."
Forecasters expected up to 10 inches in parts of New Hampshire. Up to 8 inches were expected in central Maine, already hit once this month with a storm that knocked out power across the state.
Parts of the Midwest got more than 9 inches of snow Wednesday and Thursday, with another inch or more expected as the snow tapered off during the day. (Watch a surprise spring snowfall in Texas )
"I think we are all cranky about the weather," said Pat Rowe, spokeswoman for General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which had delays and cancelations Wednesday.
In Chicago, more than 550 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport because of poor visibility on Wednesday, though operations were mostly back to normal Thursday, said city aviation spokesman Gregg Cunningham.
Record broken
Colorado was expecting the worst of the storm Friday, when up to 18 inches of snow was expected to fall in the Rocky Mountain foothills.
Denver International Airport brought contractors in early to help move snow. United Airlines canceled 80 flights Thursday night and 40 Friday morning ahead of the storm and was rebooking passengers, spokesman Jeff Kovick said.
Milwaukee broke a snowfall record for the date with 7 inches; the previous record of 3.2 inches was recorded in 1997. The town of Taylor, in west-central Wisconsin, had 9.5 inches. North Dakota and South Dakota got about 7 inches of snow.
"It's kind of flying sideways," hardware store owner Harvey Neu said in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. "It's not like a gently falling snowfall. It's more of a get-out-of-my-face type of thing."
Wednesday's Houston Astros at Chicago Cubs game had to be postponed because of the storm. Last weekend, heavy snow wiped out scheduled Mariners-Indians games for four straight days at Cleveland, Ohio. The Indians moved their home stand against the Angels to Milwaukee's enclosed field.
In Minnesota, slick roads apparently caused a pileup involving at least 70 vehicles along Highway 169 just southwest of Minneapolis. At least two people were seriously injured, the State Patrol said. Six people were killed in two separate accidents in Iowa, including a woman and her two children whose minivan collided with another minivan in the state's south-central region.
The same system brought tornadoes to the Indianapolis area, the National Weather Service said. Four tornadoes touched down in the region, causing some damage to homes and barns. No serious injuries were reported.
As a precaution Thursday, 177 snow removal trucks hit Chicago's streets in anticipation of rush-hour traffic, according to Matt Smith, a spokesman for the city's streets and sanitation department.
Snow this late is not that unusual, said weather service meteorologist Andrew Krein in Chicago.
"Typically every few years we'll get some snow in April," Krein said. "Snow in April is not unheard of."

Eerste signalen grote trek dieren begonnen...

Hevige sneeuwstormen teisteren Chicago VS
Spring snow grounds flights, closes schools
Story Highlights• More than 200 flights canceled at O'Hare Airport
• Wisconsin could get 10 inches of snow
• Schools closed in southern Minnesota

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Another spring snowstorm spread across the upper Midwest on Wednesday, closing schools and grounding more than 200 airline flights.
North Dakota had already measured 7 inches of snow, and up to 10 inches was possible in Wisconsin, the National Weather Service said.
More than 200 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport because of poor visibility, said aviation spokeswoman Wendy Abrams. The airport also had delays that were about 60 to 90 minutes on inbound and outbound flights. Delays at Midway Airport were about 20 to 30 minutes, she said. (Watch the Spring snow fall on Texas )
Nearly two dozen school districts canceled classes Wednesday across southern Minnesota, where up to 6 inches of snow was forecast.
Snow this late is not unusual, said weather service meteorologist Andrew Krein in Chicago.
"Typically every few years we'll get some snow in April," Krein said. "Snow in April is not unheard of."
However, the forecast amounts did get attention. Up to 9 inches of snow was forecast in northern Iowa, where normal temperatures at this time of year are in the 60s.
"This is quite unusual in terms of snowfall this late in the season," said Rich Kinney, a weather service meteorologist in Johnston, Iowa.
Five inches of snow was possible in northern Illinois, before turning to rain during the afternoon.
During the weekend, a cold wave sent temperatures to the freezing point as far south as the Gulf states, devastating crops, and heavy snow wiped out scheduled Angels-Indians baseball for four straight days at Cleveland. (Full story)
The teams' games were finally moved to an enclosed field at Milwaukee.

Man vertrapt door olifant

Bavianen doen weer " normaal"
Bavianen Emmen doen weer normaal

Virus treft 132 paarden in Hong Kong

Tja geloof of drankfestijn...?
Honderden doden tijdens Latijns-Amerikaans Pasen
Koploper

Home runs dip with temperatures across U.S.
Story Highlights• Six games postponed because of weather in opening week
• Elijah Dukes hits first career home run while wearing ski mask
• Mariners make snow angels after game in Cleveland canceled
• Major League Baseball scrambles to reconfigure schedules
Along with balls, strikes and outs, baseball players are tracking different statistics these days: snowfall amounts and wind chill factors.
Major League Baseball may be forced to tinker with its schedule after a weekend series in Cleveland, Ohio, was wiped out by a snowstorm and a cold snap forced the postponement of six games during the first week of the season.
Worried that more unseasonable weather could hit Cleveland again this week, baseball may send the Indians to warm up in Anaheim, California, instead of making the Angels head east. (Watch how sports fans were left out in the cold )
And temperatures aren't the only things that are way down: Home runs plunged during the season's frigid first week to their lowest level since 1993, with the average dropping from 2.4 in last season's opening week to 1.8 this year. It hadn't been that low since a 1.6 average 14 years ago, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
"You can see it. Some of the swings, not the quickest at-bats," Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said following a game in the 20-degree wind chill of windy Chicago, Illinois.
After pitching an inning Sunday at Yankee Stadium, where snow flurries fell late, Andy Pettitte was happy to get out of New York and head to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Yes, the forecast called for a gametime temperature of 38 degrees Monday, but the Twins play in a dome.
"I think we're all looking forward to playing in a controlled environment," said Pettitte, who is used to warmer surroundings back home in Texas. "This is just miserable."
Cold didn't stop Tampa Bay's Elijah Dukes, who hit his first two career homers at Yankee Stadium. He connected for his second while wearing a ski mask with a slit around the eyes just wide enough to allow him to see, looking more cat burglar than slugger.
From far away, Angels outfielder Gary Matthews Jr. took notice and reconsidered his clothing for a scheduled trip to Cleveland and Boston, Massachusetts.
"I pack tights and gloves," he said. "I think I might go topcoat for the first time in my career for this trip."
Games postponed
In damp and foggy San Francisco, California, Dave Roberts altered his pregame preparation.
"I spend a little more time in the hot tub to keep my body loose," he said.
At least he got to play.
Three games were wiped out in Cleveland, one in New York, one in Chicago and one in Detroit, Michigan. Unable to play the Indians on Sunday, at Cleveland's Jacobs Field, Richie Sexson, Adrian Beltre and some of their Seattle Mariners' teammate focused on the angels -- snow angels. With the green grass covered by a blanket wintry white flakes, they frolicked on the field along with Jose Vidro and Jose Lopez.
Baseball tried to work around the cold a decade ago, without great success. After enduring a snowout at Boston's Fenway Park, a snowy afternoon at Yankee Stadium and cold in Detroit and Chicago in 1996, baseball remade the schedule for 1997, using all five covered fields then in the majors and every West Coast site.
No brainer, right?
After teams in the East and Midwest got home, eight games were wiped out by weather on the season's second Saturday, raising that year's total to 17.
Draft schedules must be given to the players' association about nine months before opening day. Katy Feeney, baseball's senior vice president of scheduling, wished she had an advance forecast that early. She must deal with teams that want as many home dates in June, July and August -- when attendance is usually highest -- and clubs that don't want to spend weeks on the road in April.
"They'll lose fan interest if the baseball season opens and they don't come home for an extended period of time," she said. "It's like, 'Who are those guys and where did they come from?' "
That said, baseball is looking at alternatives. Bob DuPuy, the sport's chief operating officer, said outsiders are helping the sport examine its scheduling.
"Some of it is guesswork," he said. "You can have bad weather the third week in April in Detroit as easily as you could have bad weather the first week."
For AL MVP Justin Morneau, it's all relative. Spending the weekend with the Twins in Chicago wasn't nearly as frosty as some games in the minors.
"Portland, Maine, was real cold," he said. "At Rochester, I remember we played one game at Syracuse to open the season and the turf was still frozen, so we were slipping around. It was like a skating rink out there."

"Portland, Maine, was real cold," he said. "At Rochester, I remember we played one game at Syracuse to open the season and the turf was still frozen, so we were slipping around. It was like a skating rink out there."

"Paaskerst" in zeer koud VS
